The home can use a range of new ideas to help with energy usage – including Solar Thermal and Solar Water Heating Collectors. To gain electricity from roof panels you would need solar electrical panels (PV’s). Biomass Energy is the next phase, and this involves Fuel, Pellets, Stoves and Boilers burning Wood. Then we have the ancient energy of the Sun and the heat that comes from it – now called Ground Source Heat Pumps. Considering items such as Wind Power and Hydro Turbines, we are finally getting to very old forms of energy production.

Thermal Solar Energy – By using different technologies, Solar Energy is effectively made up of two types of solar panels. Firstly, there are elements that absorb energy from the sun and create hot water – known as Solar Water Heating Collectors. Secondly, Photovoltaic heat collectors – often simply referred to as Solar Electrical Panels – which transform the solar radiation into electricity. To get best results these panels need to be situated 30 degrees from the horizontal, on a south facing roof and obviously free from blockages such as trees and buildings.

As a result, Solar Water Power is often considered the most common form of Solar Energy in the UK. Solar Water heating systems are extremely important – and can provide over half of the hot water needs for houses within the UK. The cost of fitting depends on whether you do it yourself (500 to 1500 pounds) or whether you get a professional fitter – in which case it will cost between 2-5k overall.

Systems Utilising Biomass Energy: In the modern world this now includes genetically engineered ‘Energy Crops’ – but it also takes in natural plant and animal substances. As such, this is a very versatile material and can be engineered to produce heat, electricity and a combination of heat and power in the form of electricity. It is a useful point to make that the UK is one of the major producers of Biomass fuels within Europe. It is the minimal C02 produced, alongside the actual energy production, that makes this attractive to the markets. As each tree felled, it is replaced by another. This helps to reduce the overall effect on C02.

‘Energy Crops’ trees such as Willow and Poplar play a major part in the process – under the banner of Short Rotation Coppice (SRC). Dry matter is also very sought after – and perennial grasses are a good source of this. Of equal importance, although maybe less well known, are Municipal and Agricultural Waste. To begin with, Agricultural Waste is often produced as part of the agricultural process overall. Of equal importance is Municipal Waste, which comes from recycled wood and food.

Geo-Thermal Energy: This is primarily the heating of the Earth (mainly from the sun) and can be utilised in electricity and warm water production. Using the ground temperature of around 12 degrees in the UK – we can both heat and cool buildings. Generally, items such as Heat Pumps are thought of as very effective, as they produce four units of energy for every one that is used for generation. By using energy from solar electrical panels or wind turbines to power them, heat source pumps can be almost 100 percent renewable in energy production.

Wind Energy – An Update On Old Technology: As an energy source, wind energy has to be one of the oldest forms of energy creation in history. Whether to your home or to a local grid, when the energy has been generated it must be delivered to a point of usage – and cannot be stored. With regard to wind generation, it is the UK that has the highest production within Europe. Although we only utilise 1 percent of the current electricity capability from wind – we do have the ability to create 10 percent. Electricity can be produced from as little as 2p per kWh, but generally comes in somewhere between 2-10p per kWh. Recovery of the cost involved is somewhere between 6-9 months.

Finally, we have Hydropower; an area in which the UK does well within Europe. Energy creation from moving water is very old – although it is now being done in new ways. Interestingly enough, this type of energy production meets around 2 percent of the UK electrical total demand.

A hydropower system uses a turbine to create energy from moving water. No water reservoirs are required – as the turbines either run through a water drop-off system or the natural power of the river. ‘Micro-Hydro’ utilises a chunk of the outdated sluices and dam systems that have been killed off by the large national distribution methods. Having been reviewed recently, this form of electricity supply could provide 200mW of the UK capacity. A micro-hydro system like this would be expected to cost between 200 and 3,000 pounds per kW of the energy.

It is the growing worldwide energy requirement that is causing the growth in ‘Green Energy’. The UK domestic market appears to be one of the core beneficiaries of this technology.

It is the drive for installations in the domestic sector that looks to favour jobs such as plumbers and electricians. With EEC and UK recognition of renewable energy getting ever-higher on the political agenda, the grants and financial aid for introduction of these systems can only increase. Gaining installation certification across these areas can only provide further opportunity and job security to anyone already in related fields or looking to retrain. To that end, it may be worth thinking about combined training. You can then get plumbing or electrical training along with green knowledge.

Fuel prices are continuing to rise as gas and oil is steadily running out. Carbon emissions will have to be reduced. Members of the public are being urged to ease back on their consumption, and look to efficient renewable energy sources. In Britain grants of up to 80 per cent are being made available (and in some instances 100 per cent) to cover the labour costs of certain energy efficient improvements. So domestic engineers with the correct skill-sets can find themselves in high demand. It’s therefore a good idea commercially that your electrical or plumbing training includes working with green energy systems. If you’ve been in the industry for a while, check out the new courses and certifications in green engineering.

The term ‘green technology’ refers to anything that creates exploitable energy from our planet’s natural resources. The sun, the wind and the rain can all be utilised by green technology. Previous generations created wind turbines and waterwheels. Now we can benefit from solar energy as well to provide us with heat and hot water. This is leading to a lot of work for ‘Green’ electricians.

Free energy from the sun can be absorbed by solar heating equipment and converted into domestic warm water. Systems have been on sale in the UK for several decades, and the technology is now well understood. They are used in conjunction with conventional boilers or heating systems, and can provide most of the hot water for a UK family throughout the summer months. Over the year as a whole, they should provide for approximately half their hot water needs. There are two forms of collectors – namely evacuated tubes and flat plates. In order to collect the most heat possible from the sun, they should be installed on a roof that faces south.

Another use for solar power is to create electricity. For this, we need photovoltaic or PV panels. As with solar collectors that heat water, these cells need to be exposed to the most light and sun possible, so a south-facing roof is ideal. They also need an inverter to convert the direct current electricity to alternating current. From there the AC electric is connected to the electrical consumer panel that delivers electricity around the house. Householders can expect a photovoltaic system to provide around 40 per cent of their annual electricity, and so reduce both their bills and carbon footprint significantly. Anyone with a system that produces more electricity than the household consumes can automatically sell their excess to the national grid. In April 2010 Government legislation in the UK increased the amount energy companies have to pay to buy back electricity, making the initial investment more attractive. Installation of Solar PV panels usually comes under ‘permitted development’ which doesn’t require planning permission. A quick check with the local authority will confirm this.

Ground source heat (which in Britain remains fairly constant at twelve degrees centigrade) can be used to create electricity and warm water. In order to extract the heat, 40mm geothermal pipe is installed into the ground, and fed with a fluid solution. The heat arrives at the connecting heat pump because the solution warms as it flows around. Warm air or water is then pumped around a home to supplement existing heating systems. If consumers choose a ground source heat pump system to replace electric radiators, they’ll find the new system much more efficient.

When you train to work in the green installations industry, you’ll pick up a variety of worthwhile skills. Look for a course that will take you through all the domestic essentials, including health & safety, laws and regulations and if relevant guidance on starting your own business. As solar energy and heat pumps will give you the most work, you’d be sensible to focus on those. Courses in domestic green skills and qualifications are developing fast, to keep up with the increased demand caused by government incentives. If you have a special interest in water recycling, look for options that include rainwater and grey water harvesting.

The law now dictates that all homes sold in Britain must supply the new owners with an Energy Performance Certificate to illustrate energy usage and where efficiencies can be made. Savings in some cases can run into thousands of pounds a year. The government is offering householders substantial grants to cover certain installation costs where work is undertaken by appropriately qualified Green Engineers. That’s merely the beginning though. By the year 2016, the law states that all new houses will have to produce a minimum of 15 per cent of their energy from replenishable supplies. The time is quickly coming when everyone will be looking for alternative energy solutions for their homes. Demand for skilled installers is about to soar!

Turn out your lights when you are not home. When you leave the house, leave on as few lights as possible. For safety reasons, lots of people like to leave on a light or two, but make sure that you do this only when it is absolutely necessary.

Make sure your house is properly insulated. This will help the house to maintain higher temperatures and reduce the amount of heat energy necessary during the winter.

If your computer or other appliances have an energy-saving mode, make sure that you choose this setting.

Unplug your cell-phone charger when you are not using it. If you leave it plugged in while it is not charging anything, you are wasting electricity.

Install fluorescent light bulbs. They use much less energy than traditional light bulbs. Also, make sure that your house has windows and skylights that allow you to optimize your use of daylight.

Limit the number of electrical devices you are using at once. If you have the television on, turn off the computer. If you are listening to the radio, make sure the television is not on. This is good for peace of mind as well as cutting costs.

These are just a few ways that you can save energy. You also might consider having an energy efficiency expert evaluate your home to figure out other ways you could cut down on your energy use. This will benefit the environment and your budget!

Two of the biggest wastes of energy in the home are inefficient use of heating and cooling systems so, as a first step, ensure these are well maintained. Secondly, try notching your thermostats down a degree or two; you shouldn’t feel the impact too much physically but you sure will financially. Also ensure your air conditioning unit has good airflow, and any obstructions are removed.

Household appliances are also big users of energy, notably washers and dryers. Ideally, washing should be line dried in the fresh air. This obviously is a big saver, but also adds certain freshness. If the dryer does have to be used however, try and do loads so that one load goes in as soon as another finishes. This helps to retain heat in the dryer and saves energy.

Another appliance that eats up energy is the refrigerator. There are not too many people that clean the rear of their refrigerators all too often but, if this is done weekly or at least monthly, dust will be kept to a minimum and the refrigerator will operate much more efficiently. Also, the seal around the doors should be checked often to ensure there are no leaks wasting energy.

Ovens and stoves should also be well maintained; dust, grease and grime reduce efficiency and vary the cooking temperatures produced dramatically. It is also worth having a thermometer to use in an oven to get the exact temperature, as LED displays are not always accurate. A side benefit of the thermometer is that you will likely find that your food cooks better.

These are only a few basic steps to help get you started with home energy conservation. Once started, you are sure to find many other areas you can cut back on or make more efficient. Not only are you helping to do your small bit for society, but your bank balance will look a whole lot better too.

But does that truly translate into real value to a building owner or company in terms of value beyond simply lower utility costs? Companies that tout power factor improvement (kVAR correction) and transient voltage suppression are a good example of this bad trend. Lately we are seeing more and more of these companies cropping up and feel it is time to set the record straight.

First, transient voltage surge suppression (TVSS) plays a valuable role in improving power quality to protect sensitive equipment inside a facility. However, TVSS does not save energy. TVSS’s are only active a tiny fraction of a second to protect against voltage surges which only last for less than a millisecond. To actually reduce energy consumption the TVSS would need to actually cut power consumption for an extended period of time which is not what they are designed to do. Again, TVSS is important to protect sensitive electrical equipment but buyers should avoid vendors promising, or even guaranteeing, that they will reduce energy consumption.

Now what about vendors who claim that improving power factor will save 15% or 20% or 30% of energy consumption and corresponding cost? This one is a little trickier.

For residential applications, power factor does nothing to save energy because the typical home already has an average power factor of about 0.97 which is almost the perfect power factor of 1 or unity. In addition, the device (called a capacitor) is placed at the main circuit breaker. According to IEEE 5.5.3.3 capacitors must be situated at or near the respective inductive loads to reduce power system losses by reducing heat and distribution losses known as I2R losses.

So what about commercial and industrial facilities using power factor correction to reduce energy costs? It is perfectly appropriate for a company that is incurring penalties or a kVA billing structure from the utility company to improve the facility’s overall power factor by employing a capacitor bank at the main service entrance or individual capacitors at or near the respective motor loads. Doing so will eliminate the power factor penalties and/or reduce the kVA demand charges on the utility bill which can save significant money and provide a significant ROI on the investment.

But what about power factor correction reducing kWh consumption? IEEE also tells us that I2R losses only account for 2 to 5% of the total load in a facility. Simple math tells us that it would be against the laws of physics to get the 15% to 30% energy reduction claimed by some vendors. Think about it. Even if your facility had 5% distribution losses and you could correct 100% of the problem via power factor correction at every load (which can’t be done) you would still only save 5% at the most. No where near the claims of some capacitor vendors and manufacturers.

All that said, power factor correction when done properly will eliminate utility penalties and kVA demand charges, improve facility power quality, increase electrical system capacity, and save a little energy when applied to the appropriate motor loads.

So make an investment in transient voltage surge suppression and power factor correction when appropriate and necessary. But caveat emptor!

What are green job recruiters and do they make it easier to land the green collar jobs that are available? Ecological concerns have brought these jobs to the high end of the list. The term refers to a very wide range of jobs that require all kinds of different prerequisites. Learning what types of jobs are available for you can be helpful through a recruiter, but only if you have some sort of education or experience in the field.

Just because a green job recruiter acts like you are absolutely the perfect fit for the company (or companies he or) she represents doesn’t mean you have a job. You have to be approved. He or she is there to find the right candidates for the positions that are to be filled. It can be exciting to be complimented and encouraged by someone who seems like they are sure about what they are talking about. Take it, smile, and learn about the requirements needed. Green job recruiters need qualified individuals to bring the science of going green to a whole new level.

Whether you have gone through an entire degree or you are one of the displaced, green jobs are not as easy to get as one might think. Political and social movements keep looking to the green job market to become as powerful as the stock market once was. Get informed as early as possible when you are speaking to the green job recruiter. This way you know immediately if you can fill the shoes of the green industry.

Science and research positions are the most common. While there will be skilled and unskilled labor openings, this will not be an option for quite some time to come. We need to see the mass construction and installation of these alternative energy sources in order to start blanket hiring. Green building jobs will improve this situation.

The most valuable aspect of a green job recruiter is their ability to put you in touch with a direct line to positions that are open. Some experts say that even if you give your resume to the recruiter, you send one in independently once you know your education and experience might qualify you for the job. Submit your resume online, especially if you post it to specific sites that are literally trolling for green job talent. Search engine optimization of your resume is recommended.

If you do speak at length with a green job recruiter, bear in mind that he or she is there to connect you to the company. But the company also wants the recruiter to strike up a good deal. Be just as knowledgeable about the potential salary as you are about the potential job and you will be in a much better position. Don’t shoot for the sky, but be aware of what makes a good deal.

Speaking to a green job recruiter is always a good idea since they might be able to give you a lead on a job that you weren’t currently aware of. There are some positions that only hire by word of mouth and recruitment rather than advertising. This applies to all kinds of jobs of interest, including some part time positions.

Gather the necessary information that you need in order to become enlightened about a job opening that the green job recruiter is willing to fill you in on. Keep in mind that a recruiter can be helpful as not all jobs are open to general applications and are never advertised. Give the recruiter enough to take back to the company while coming away with enough information to keep moving forward on your own.

It’s a common problem no matter where you are, and whether you’re gathering donations for your church or a charitable organization: you can really have a hard time motivating people to do good. Try as you might, you will always bump against people who do not think that going to a homeless shelter for a night of volunteering is not as worthwhile as going to the club.

No matter how hard you work at it, it can be hard to convince people to help you fold clothes or gather canned goods for the less fortunate, especially when they have jobs that they think are more important than any other earthly activity. And no matter what you do, there will be people who will criticize your work as being a band-aid to other problems that should be solved.

Despite all these criticisms and setbacks, you should be able to do the work that you want without worrying about what people think. Moreover, you should be able to bank on a willingness on your part to motivate people to do what they can to help your cause out. How do you motivate people to do good? Here are a few tips that you may want to take into consideration.

- When starting off your marketing blitz to get people to listen to you, keep in mind that you are not preaching to the choir, but neither are you trying to make devils listen to you. You will have a healthy mix of people who both want to help and who don’t really care. The key is to hit your note in the middle and not end up alienating any of them.

By being too solicitous and too pity-inducing, you end up irritating the people who don’t care yet. By being too appealing to people’s emotions, you may end up annoying the people who already do care and want to help out. Avoid being self-righteous or off handed. Remember, when you want to help people, you don’t want to show how helpful you already are.

- Avoid using negative language, such as, “Don’t go to the club tonight when you can help people!” You don’t want people to feel that they are doing something that they should substitute with something that you are endorsing. This could lead them into thinking that you are trying to change them, and whenever people feel that their feelings and perceptions are being attacked, they will go on the defensive.

- If you are working with a charitable organization, try to tie in your work with something enjoyable. Have a dance party or rent out the club for a party and charge for entrance. Promise that you will give proceeds from your earnings to a charitable organization or cause. Have people dress up in costumes, and then give prizes away for the best costume, and ask people to bring canned goods with them.

Find a way to tie in your cause to something that people could do and have fun with. You want to look human, too, and you want to get as many people as possible. Just be sure to stay within the bounds of decency and you will be fine.

- Lastly, surround yourself with reputable people. No one wants to donate to a cause that is associated with gangsters, thieves, or anyone who doesn’t have a solid enough reputation. You want to have people around you that anyone can look up to and admire.

Observations from Leanne:

All of this HAD to be said. We all need to quit prancing around the edges of what is going on in our world… NOT just artists but every soul on the planet. I am not surprised to read this, coming from a creative, however. I have always felt that those of us with the creative edge are a bit – to a LOT – closer to the heart of things. We see the invisible along with the invisible. We more deeply understand thoughts, feelings, and emotion, while much of the world seems inured to the things swirling around them.

Amy Wilson states, “The recession isn’t ‘all in our heads;’ it’s not a matter of just cheering up and thinking optimistically and it will all go away.” Listen up folks, it is NOT going away. At least for a period of time, what we are experiencing is “The Way We Are,” and not “The Way We Were.” (1973 Streisand flick)

This article is absolutely packed with good advice. It’s somewhat dismal, but agonizingly realistic. Amy goes on, “What’s happening in the world right now is scary. And like the saying goes: if you’re not scared, you’re not paying attention.” Here is THE place to start: “Admit that things are bad – really, really bad. The only way we’re going to ever overcome what the hell is going on is if we take a moment and really acknowledge what’s happening. You can’t really understand the problem if you keep telling yourself that it’s over or it’s not as bad as absolutely everyone around you is assuring you it is.”

Can you control your situation? It is MY belief that there are things you can control. You can control, somewhat to mostly, your reaction to things. You can choose to remain calm, which is the only setting that will allow you to think and to plan. Amy Wilson states, “Know that you are not in control. We have no idea what is going to happen in the next few years. Really. I feel pretty confident in saying that the art world is going to look quite different in about five years than it does right now…” I agree, the creative world will look different, but only in keeping with what the rest of the world will look like. Again, you CAN control your thought patterns, and your reactions to the whirling chaos.

Amy’s next statement mirrors my own, in my experience in teaching art online. Any parent will agree… any thinking human being will echo these thoughts… The next generations have inherited ALL of the history of humankind. “The one thing I feel pretty good about predicting is that when the smoke all clears, who is going to be in control of it is that new generation that I’ve been so worried about giving bad advice to. They’re the ones who are going to solve all the problems dumped on them, because they have to – they have no choice.”

If we can keep enough perspective, if we can take our collective knowledge and really BE a support to our young people… we have a chance.

Amy gives solid thought and advice in her concluding points:

1. “I have no idea what the future holds, and I just really needed to say that. (Nobody else knows, either, and run away from those who say they do.)”

2. “We’re all pretty terrified. Some people are terrified-optimistic and others terrified-pessimistic, but overall we share the same base emotion.”

3. “It’s going to be ok, because it has to be ok. There is no other choice.”

Yes, our choices are very limited.

It is now finally the time that I’ve seen since 1989 and entering the computing world from the Art world. Science and Art can be wonderful bedfellows. Da Vinci was ever clear about that.
