Why don’t you just watch and gain knowledge from instructors one-on-one in ready-made lessons, doing them when it’s convenient for you, not someone else.

You can study at home on your computer or if you’ve got a laptop, you can go anywhere. If you’ve got questions, then utilise the 24×7 Support (that should come with any technical program.)

Simply re-watch and re-cover the study modules at any time you want or need. You also don’t need to write any notes as you have the lesson indefinitely.

What could be more straightforward: No wasted time or money, travelling is avoided; and you have a far more relaxed study setting.

It’s worth remembering, if you’ve had any relevant accreditation or direct-experience, then you will often be able to pick-up at a different starting-point to someone who is new to the field.

Starting with a user skills program first can be the best way to commence your computer studies, depending on your current skill level.

Whether you want to improve your computer user skills, or would like to achieve professional qualifications in IT, there are plain-speaking courses and back-up to turn your goals into reality.

By keeping costs to a minimum, computer training providers can now offer modern courses with excellent training and guidance for much lower prices than those expected from the old-school colleges.

Beginning from the viewpoint that it’s necessary to locate the employment that excites us first and foremost, before we’re even able to mull over which career training ticks the right boxes, how can we choose the way that suits us?

Scanning a list of odd-sounding and meaningless job titles is next to useless. Most of us don’t even know what the neighbours do for a living – so what chance do we have in understanding the complexities of a specific IT job.

The key to answering this dilemma appropriately flows from a thorough conversation around a number of areas:

* What hobbies you have and enjoy – these can reveal the things will satisfy you.

* For what reasons you’re stepping into IT – maybe you’d like to triumph over a particular goal like working for yourself maybe.

* The income requirements you have?

* There are many markets to choose from in IT – it’s wise to pick up a basic understanding of what separates them.

* Having a proper look at what commitment and time you’ll make available.

In all honesty, it’s obvious that the only real way to seek advice on these issues tends to be through a good talk with an advisor or professional who understands the IT industry (and more importantly the commercial requirements.)

Don’t accept anything less than the latest Microsoft (or relevant organisation’s) authorised exam preparation and simulation materials.

Steer clear of relying on non-official exam preparation questions. The terminology of their questions can be completely unlike authorised versions – and often this creates real issues in the actual examination.

Ensure that you ask for exam preparation tools so you can test your understanding at any point. Simulated or practice exams add to your knowledge bank – then you’re much more at ease with the real thing.

A fatal Faux-Pas that we encounter all too often is to concentrate on the course itself, rather than starting with where they want to get to. Training academies are brimming over with unaware students who chose a course based on what sounded good – rather than what would get them the career they desired.

It’s possible, for example, to obtain tremendous satisfaction from a year of studying only to end up putting 20 long years into something completely unrewarding, entirely because you stumbled into it without some quality research at the beginning.

Spend some time thinking about what you want to earn and how ambitious you are. Usually, this will point the way to what particular exams will be required and what industry will expect from you in return.

It’s good advice for all students to chat with an experienced professional before deciding on their training programme. This is required to ensure it has the required elements for the chosen career.

Incorporating examinations as an inclusive element of the package price then including an exam guarantee is common for many training course providers. Consider the facts:

Everybody’s aware that they’re still paying for it – it’s not so hard to see that it’s already been included in the overall price charged by the course provider. It’s definitely not free (it’s just marketing companies think we’ll fall for anything they say!)

Should you seriously need to get a first time pass, evidence suggests you must avoid exam guarantees and pay when entering exams, give it the necessary attention and be ready for the task.

Isn’t it in your interests to hold on to your money and pay for the exam when you take the exam, rather than coughing up months or even a year or two in advance to a training college, and to do it in a local testing office – rather than possibly hours away from your area?

Paying in advance for exam fees (which also includes interest if you’ve taken out a loan) is madness. Don’t line companies bank accounts with additional funds only to please their Bank Manager! There are those who hope that you will never make it to exams – but they won’t refund the cash.

It’s worth noting that exam re-takes with training companies with an ‘Exam Guarantee’ are monitored with tight restrictions. They’ll insist that you take mock exams first till you’ve proven conclusively that you can pass.

Prometric and VUE exams are approximately 112 pounds in the United Kingdom today. Why spend so much more on charges for ‘Exam Guarantees’ (often covertly rolled into the cost of the course) – when good quality study materials, the proper support and consistent and systematic learning, coupled with quality exam simulation software is what will really see you through.

Qualifying in CompTIA A+ on its own will give you the ability to repair and fix laptops, Macs and PC’s; ones that are most often not part of a network – which is for the most part the home market.

If you aspire to looking after computer networks, you should add Network+ to your A+ course. This qualification will enable you to assist you greatly in the job market. Alternatively, you may prefer the networking qualifications from Microsoft, i.e. MCP, MCSA MCSE.

It’s usual for students to get confused with one aspect of their training which doesn’t even occur to them: The method used to ’segment’ the courseware before being physically delivered to you.

Drop-shipping your training elements stage by stage, as you pass each exam is the normal way of receiving your courseware. Of course, this sounds sensible, but you might like to consider this:

Many students find that the company’s standard order of study is not what they would prefer. It’s often the case that a slightly different order suits them better. Perhaps you don’t make it at the pace they expect?

To be honest, the best option is to have their ideal ‘order’ of training laid out, but make sure you have all of your learning modules right from the beginning. You then have everything in case you don’t finish within their ideal time-table.

Students looking to kick off an IT career usually don’t know which route to follow, let alone what sector to obtain accreditation for.

Consequently, if you’ve got no understanding of the IT market, how could you possibly know what a particular IT employee fills their day with? How can you possibly choose what training route provides the best chances for you to get there.

Reflection on many factors is vital if you want to expose the right answer for you:

* The sort of individual you consider yourself to be – what tasks do you really enjoy, and on the other side of the coin – what you definitely don’t enjoy.

* Why you want to consider stepping into computing – maybe you want to triumph over a particular goal such as being your own boss maybe.

* Is salary further up on your list of priorities than other factors.

* Some students don’t fully understand the work demanded to achieve their goals.

* How much effort you will put into the training program.

For the majority of us, sifting through all these ideas needs a long talk with a professional who has direct industry experience. Not only the accreditations – you also need to understand the commercial expectations and needs of the market as well.

Qualifications from the commercial sector are now, without a doubt, starting to replace the traditional academic paths into the IT sector – but why should this be?

Corporate based study (to use industry-speak) is far more effective and specialised. The IT sector is aware that this level of specialised understanding is what’s needed to cope with a technically advancing world. Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe dominate in this arena.

Obviously, a reasonable amount of relevant additional information has to be covered, but precise specialised knowledge in the exact job role gives a vendor trained person a huge edge.

If an employer understands what work they need doing, then all it takes is an advert for the exact skill-set required to meet that need. Syllabuses are all based on the same criteria and don’t change between schools (in the way that degree courses can).

It can be a nerve-racking task, but securing your first computer related job is often relieved by training colleges, through a Job Placement Assistance programme. Having said that, occasionally too much is made of this feature, as it is genuinely quite straightforward for any focused and well taught person to secure work in the IT industry – as employers are keen to find appropriately skilled employees.

Whatever you do, don’t leave it until you have passed your final exams before polishing up your CV. The day you start training, mark down what you’re doing and tell people about it!

You might not even have taken your exams when you’ll secure your initial junior support position; however this is not possible unless you’ve posted your CV on job sites.

The best services to help you find a job are generally local IT focused employment agencies. Because they only get paid when they place you, they’ll work that much harder to get a result.

A good number of men and women, apparently, spend evenings and weekends on their training and studies (sometimes for years), and just give up when it comes to trying to get the right position. Promote yourself… Do everything you can to let employers know about you. Don’t think a job’s just going to jump out in front of you.
