The home can use a range of new ideas to help with energy usage – including Solar Thermal and Solar Water Heating Collectors. To gain electricity from roof panels you would need solar electrical panels (PV’s). Biomass Energy is the next phase, and this involves Fuel, Pellets, Stoves and Boilers burning Wood. Then we have the ancient energy of the Sun and the heat that comes from it – now called Ground Source Heat Pumps. Considering items such as Wind Power and Hydro Turbines, we are finally getting to very old forms of energy production.

Thermal Solar Energy – By using different technologies, Solar Energy is effectively made up of two types of solar panels. Firstly, there are elements that absorb energy from the sun and create hot water – known as Solar Water Heating Collectors. Secondly, Photovoltaic heat collectors – often simply referred to as Solar Electrical Panels – which transform the solar radiation into electricity. To get best results these panels need to be situated 30 degrees from the horizontal, on a south facing roof and obviously free from blockages such as trees and buildings.

As a result, Solar Water Power is often considered the most common form of Solar Energy in the UK. Solar Water heating systems are extremely important – and can provide over half of the hot water needs for houses within the UK. The cost of fitting depends on whether you do it yourself (500 to 1500 pounds) or whether you get a professional fitter – in which case it will cost between 2-5k overall.

Systems Utilising Biomass Energy: In the modern world this now includes genetically engineered ‘Energy Crops’ – but it also takes in natural plant and animal substances. As such, this is a very versatile material and can be engineered to produce heat, electricity and a combination of heat and power in the form of electricity. It is a useful point to make that the UK is one of the major producers of Biomass fuels within Europe. It is the minimal C02 produced, alongside the actual energy production, that makes this attractive to the markets. As each tree felled, it is replaced by another. This helps to reduce the overall effect on C02.

‘Energy Crops’ trees such as Willow and Poplar play a major part in the process – under the banner of Short Rotation Coppice (SRC). Dry matter is also very sought after – and perennial grasses are a good source of this. Of equal importance, although maybe less well known, are Municipal and Agricultural Waste. To begin with, Agricultural Waste is often produced as part of the agricultural process overall. Of equal importance is Municipal Waste, which comes from recycled wood and food.

Geo-Thermal Energy: This is primarily the heating of the Earth (mainly from the sun) and can be utilised in electricity and warm water production. Using the ground temperature of around 12 degrees in the UK – we can both heat and cool buildings. Generally, items such as Heat Pumps are thought of as very effective, as they produce four units of energy for every one that is used for generation. By using energy from solar electrical panels or wind turbines to power them, heat source pumps can be almost 100 percent renewable in energy production.

Wind Energy – An Update On Old Technology: As an energy source, wind energy has to be one of the oldest forms of energy creation in history. Whether to your home or to a local grid, when the energy has been generated it must be delivered to a point of usage – and cannot be stored. With regard to wind generation, it is the UK that has the highest production within Europe. Although we only utilise 1 percent of the current electricity capability from wind – we do have the ability to create 10 percent. Electricity can be produced from as little as 2p per kWh, but generally comes in somewhere between 2-10p per kWh. Recovery of the cost involved is somewhere between 6-9 months.

Finally, we have Hydropower; an area in which the UK does well within Europe. Energy creation from moving water is very old – although it is now being done in new ways. Interestingly enough, this type of energy production meets around 2 percent of the UK electrical total demand.

A hydropower system uses a turbine to create energy from moving water. No water reservoirs are required – as the turbines either run through a water drop-off system or the natural power of the river. ‘Micro-Hydro’ utilises a chunk of the outdated sluices and dam systems that have been killed off by the large national distribution methods. Having been reviewed recently, this form of electricity supply could provide 200mW of the UK capacity. A micro-hydro system like this would be expected to cost between 200 and 3,000 pounds per kW of the energy.

It is the growing worldwide energy requirement that is causing the growth in ‘Green Energy’. The UK domestic market appears to be one of the core beneficiaries of this technology.

It is the drive for installations in the domestic sector that looks to favour jobs such as plumbers and electricians. With EEC and UK recognition of renewable energy getting ever-higher on the political agenda, the grants and financial aid for introduction of these systems can only increase. Gaining installation certification across these areas can only provide further opportunity and job security to anyone already in related fields or looking to retrain. To that end, it may be worth thinking about combined training. You can then get plumbing or electrical training along with green knowledge.

Fuel prices are continuing to rise as gas and oil is steadily running out. Carbon emissions will have to be reduced. Members of the public are being urged to ease back on their consumption, and look to efficient renewable energy sources. In Britain grants of up to 80 per cent are being made available (and in some instances 100 per cent) to cover the labour costs of certain energy efficient improvements. So domestic engineers with the correct skill-sets can find themselves in high demand. It’s therefore a good idea commercially that your electrical or plumbing training includes working with green energy systems. If you’ve been in the industry for a while, check out the new courses and certifications in green engineering.

The term ‘green technology’ refers to anything that creates exploitable energy from our planet’s natural resources. The sun, the wind and the rain can all be utilised by green technology. Previous generations created wind turbines and waterwheels. Now we can benefit from solar energy as well to provide us with heat and hot water. This is leading to a lot of work for ‘Green’ electricians.

Free energy from the sun can be absorbed by solar heating equipment and converted into domestic warm water. Systems have been on sale in the UK for several decades, and the technology is now well understood. They are used in conjunction with conventional boilers or heating systems, and can provide most of the hot water for a UK family throughout the summer months. Over the year as a whole, they should provide for approximately half their hot water needs. There are two forms of collectors – namely evacuated tubes and flat plates. In order to collect the most heat possible from the sun, they should be installed on a roof that faces south.

Another use for solar power is to create electricity. For this, we need photovoltaic or PV panels. As with solar collectors that heat water, these cells need to be exposed to the most light and sun possible, so a south-facing roof is ideal. They also need an inverter to convert the direct current electricity to alternating current. From there the AC electric is connected to the electrical consumer panel that delivers electricity around the house. Householders can expect a photovoltaic system to provide around 40 per cent of their annual electricity, and so reduce both their bills and carbon footprint significantly. Anyone with a system that produces more electricity than the household consumes can automatically sell their excess to the national grid. In April 2010 Government legislation in the UK increased the amount energy companies have to pay to buy back electricity, making the initial investment more attractive. Installation of Solar PV panels usually comes under ‘permitted development’ which doesn’t require planning permission. A quick check with the local authority will confirm this.

Ground source heat (which in Britain remains fairly constant at twelve degrees centigrade) can be used to create electricity and warm water. In order to extract the heat, 40mm geothermal pipe is installed into the ground, and fed with a fluid solution. The heat arrives at the connecting heat pump because the solution warms as it flows around. Warm air or water is then pumped around a home to supplement existing heating systems. If consumers choose a ground source heat pump system to replace electric radiators, they’ll find the new system much more efficient.

When you train to work in the green installations industry, you’ll pick up a variety of worthwhile skills. Look for a course that will take you through all the domestic essentials, including health & safety, laws and regulations and if relevant guidance on starting your own business. As solar energy and heat pumps will give you the most work, you’d be sensible to focus on those. Courses in domestic green skills and qualifications are developing fast, to keep up with the increased demand caused by government incentives. If you have a special interest in water recycling, look for options that include rainwater and grey water harvesting.

The law now dictates that all homes sold in Britain must supply the new owners with an Energy Performance Certificate to illustrate energy usage and where efficiencies can be made. Savings in some cases can run into thousands of pounds a year. The government is offering householders substantial grants to cover certain installation costs where work is undertaken by appropriately qualified Green Engineers. That’s merely the beginning though. By the year 2016, the law states that all new houses will have to produce a minimum of 15 per cent of their energy from replenishable supplies. The time is quickly coming when everyone will be looking for alternative energy solutions for their homes. Demand for skilled installers is about to soar!

Students should be very wary of forking out hundreds of pounds extra in ‘Exam Guarantee’ costs (often covertly rolled into the cost of the course) – when good quality study materials, the proper support and a commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools are actually the key to your success.

Students often end up having issues because of one area of their training which doesn’t even occur to them: The way the training is divided into chunks and packaged off through the post.

The majority of training companies will set up a program spread over 1-3 years, and send out each piece as you get to the end of each exam. This sounds reasonable until you consider the following:

Maybe the order of study offered by the provider doesn’t suit. It may be difficult to get through all the elements at the speed required?

For the perfect solution, you’d ask for every single material to be delivered immediately – so you’ll have them all for the future to come back to – at any time you choose. Variations can then be made to the order that you move through the program if you find another route more intuitive.

We can all agree: There really is absolutely no personal job security now; there’s only market or business security – as any company can fire a solitary member of staff when it fits their business interests.

Wherever we find increasing skills shortages coupled with areas of high demand however, we always find a newer brand of market-security; where, fuelled by the conditions of constant growth, companies just can’t get the staff required.

The Information Technology (IT) skills shortfall around the country currently stands at just over 26 percent, as shown by a recent e-Skills analysis. Or, to put it differently, this means that the United Kingdom can only find three qualified staff for every four jobs available now.

This one fact in itself is the backbone of why the United Kingdom urgently requires many more trainees to join the IT sector.

Undoubtedly, it really is a fabulous time to retrain into Information Technology (IT).

Be watchful that any certifications that you’re considering are commercially relevant and are the most recent versions. The ‘in-house’ certifications provided by many companies are not normally useful in gaining employment.

From an employer’s viewpoint, only top businesses like Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco or CompTIA (for example) give enough bang for your buck. Nothing else will cut the mustard.

Before embarking on a course, look for some advice – find an industry expert; someone who’ll give you career advice based on what works best for you, and analyse the courses which are appropriate for you:

* Is working with other people your thing? Do you like to deal with the public? Maybe you like to deal with tasks that you can get on with on your own?

* Are you thinking carefully about which sector you maybe could work in? (In this economy, it’s even more crucial to choose carefully.)

* Is this the last time you envisage re-training, and if it is, do you suppose your new career will service that need?

* Do you have the assurance that your industry training course will make you employable, and have the ability to work right until your pension kicks in?

It would be an idea for you to find out more about the IT industry – there are greater numbers of positions than employees, plus it’s one of the few choices of career where the sector is growing. Contrary to what some people believe, IT isn’t all techie people staring at their computers every day (though naturally some jobs are like that.) The vast majority of roles are done by average folk who want to earn a very good living.

Qualifications from the commercial sector are now, undoubtedly, starting to replace the traditional academic paths into the IT sector – why then is this?

With a growing demand for specific technological expertise, industry has moved to specialist courses that can only be obtained from the actual vendors – that is companies such as Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe. This frequently provides reductions in both cost and time.

Of course, a reasonable degree of background information must be taught, but essential specialisation in the exact job role gives a vendor educated person a massive advantage.

Imagine if you were an employer – and you needed to take on someone with a very particular skill-set. What should you do: Go through reams of different degrees and college qualifications from hopeful applicants, asking for course details and which trade skills they have, or choose a specific set of accreditations that exactly fulfil your criteria, and draw up from that who you want to speak to. You’ll then be able to concentrate on getting a feel for the person at interview – instead of having to work out if they can do the job.

You should only consider learning programs that lead to commercially recognised qualifications. There are way too many minor schools pushing unknown ‘in-house’ certificates that are essentially useless in today’s commercial market.

You’ll find that only recognised accreditation from the top companies like Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco and Adobe will have any meaning to employers.

Students who consider this area of study are usually quite practically-minded, and don’t really enjoy classrooms, and poring through books and manuals. If this is putting you off studying, go for more modern interactive training, where everything is presented via full motion video.

If we’re able to get all of our senses involved in our learning, then the results are usually dramatically better.

Study programs now come via DVD-ROM discs, where your computer becomes the centre of your learning. Using video-streaming, you can watch instructors demonstrating how to do something, and then have a go at it yourself – in an interactive lab.

It’s wise to view a small selection of training examples before you purchase a course. What you want are instructor demonstrations, video tutorials and interactive modules with audio-visual elements.

Avoiding training that is delivered purely online is generally a good idea. You want physical CD/DVD ROM course materials where offered, so that you have access at all times – you don’t want to be reliant on a good broadband connection all the time.

Consider the following points in detail if you’re inclined to think the sales ploy of ‘guaranteeing’ exams sounds like a benefit to the student:

You’ll pay for it ultimately. One thing’s for sure – it isn’t free – they’ve simply charged more for the whole training package.

We all want to pass first time. Taking your exams progressively in order and paying as you go sees you much better placed to get through first time – you put the effort in and think carefully about the costs.

Paying maybe a thousand pounds extra on an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is naive – when a commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools is what will really guarantee success.

Working from a home office does not necessarily mean you are less productive compared to those working in real offices. Similarly, this does not mean that if you work at home, you can afford to be sloppy. A well-organized home office can help you become more efficient and productive.

The first step, obviously, is to make sure that you have a good sized desk and a comfortable chair. After all, you’ll be spending a lot of time there and you’ll want to have enough space for everything you’re working on.

You would also need basic office supplies and equipment like pens, writing pads, organizers, a functioning telephone or fax, a computer, and maybe even a photocopier. The type of job and the kind of business that you do determines the things you need in your home office.

Labeled containers are the best friends of someone who works from home. It’s easy to get disorganized or lazy, but not if you have bins for everything.

So, invest in some cheap plastic drawers or bins and take the time to designate one for each item, such as your outgoing mail. You could even take it a step further and color code your drawers.

Finally, you have to learn how to not under or over work, when you work from home. It’s easy to lose track of time and either not work as much as you should or work constantly and forget that you have a life away from your desk.

One way of doing this is by setting yourself specific time periods where you have to work and maintaining that schedule no matter what happens to distract you.

As you discover more about training companies, avoid any that short-change you by failing to up-grade to the latest Microsoft level. Overall, this will frustrate and cost the student a great deal more because they’ve been educated in an outdated MCSE course which inevitably will have to be up-dated almost immediately.

Look out for training companies who are just interested in your money. Realise that buying a course for an MCSE is much like purchasing a vehicle. They are not all equal; some will serve you very well, whilst others will probably break down on route. A valid provider will give you a thorough consultation to ensure you’re on the right course. If a company has a creditable product, you’ll be able to see a sample of what you’re getting before you buy.

Many trainers are still maintaining one of the most out-dated training concepts – classroom attendance. Usually touted as a major benefit, if you track down someone who’s been through a few, you’ll most likely hear about many or all of these issues:

* Lots of round trips – normally hundreds of miles at a time.

* Workshop access; frequently weekdays only and sometimes 2-3 days at a time. It’s not easy to get the leave of absence.

* Usually, we discover 4 weeks off each year isn’t enough by far. Knock off at least half of this for educational workshops and you’ll experience even more problems.

* In a situation where running costs are very high, many training companies have to put on larger classes – which isn’t ideal (and much less personal).

* Workshop pace – centre-days usually contain trainees of different talent, consequently tension develops between those that want to go quickly as opposed to those who prefer a more relaxed pace.

* You shouldn’t ignore the extra expense of driving or taking public transport or over-night bed and breakfast either. Don’t be surprised to find this become 00’s or even 000’s extra. Sit down and add it up – it’ll shock and surprise you.

* We all enjoy our privacy. We don’t want to risk giving up any possible promotion that could awarded to us while we’re training.

* It’s very common for students not to pose the question that’s bugging them – just because they’re with their peers.

* There are those of us who sometimes work elsewhere in the country for several days at a time, consider the added problems of getting to the needed events, as time is now more scarce than ever.

Why don’t you just watch and gain knowledge from instructors one-on-one in ready-made lessons, doing them when it’s convenient for you, not someone else.

You can study at home on your computer or if you’ve got a laptop, you can go anywhere. If you’ve got questions, then utilise the 24×7 Support (that should come with any technical program.)

Simply re-watch and re-cover the study modules at any time you want or need. You also don’t need to write any notes as you have the lesson indefinitely.

What could be more straightforward: No wasted time or money, travelling is avoided; and you have a far more relaxed study setting.

There is a tidal wave of change coming via technology over the next few decades – and it becomes more and more thrilling each day.

We’re at the dawn of beginning to understand what this change will mean to us. How we communicate and interact with everyone around us will be inordinately affected by computers and the web.

Always remember that the average salary in the world of IT over Britain as a whole is significantly more than average salaries nationally, therefore you will be in a good position to gain noticeably more as an IT specialist, than you would in most typical jobs.

It would appear there is no easing up for IT industry expansion in the United Kingdom. The market is still growing enormously, and as we have a skills gap that means we only typically have three IT workers for every four jobs it’s most unlikely that things will be any different for decades to come.

Many training companies will require you to do mock exams and with-hold subsequent exam entries from you until you’ve demonstrated an excellent ability to pass – which makes an ‘Exam Guarantee’ frankly useless.

Splashing out often many hundreds of pounds extra on ‘Exam Guarantees’ is naive – when a commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools is what will get you through.

For professional applications you should have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the entire Adobe Web Creative Suite. This will include (though it’s not limited to) Action Script and Flash. If your goal is to become an ACP (Adobe Certified Professional) or an ACE (Adobe Certified Expert) these skills will be absolutely essential.

Constructing the website is only the beginning of the skills needed though – to create traffic, maintain its content, and work on dynamic sites that are database driven, you’ll need to bolt on other programming skills, like HTML, PHP and MySQL. You should also gain a good understanding of E-Commerce and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).

Getting into your first IT role is often made easier with a Job Placement Assistance service. Don’t get overly impressed with this service – it’s quite easy for their marketing department to make too much of it. In reality, the need for well trained IT people in Great Britain is what will make you attractive to employers.

However, don’t wait till you have completed your exams before getting your CV updated. The day you start training, list what you’re working on and place it on jobsites!

Getting onto the ‘maybe’ pile of CV’s is more than not being known. A decent number of junior support roles are bagged by trainees (sometimes when they’ve only just got going.)

You can usually expect better performance from a specialist locally based employment agency than you’ll experience from any training company’s centralised service, because they will understand the local industry and employment needs.

Many students, apparently, are prepared to study their hearts out (for years sometimes), and then just stop instead of trying to get a job. Market yourself… Do everything you can to get yourself known. Good jobs don’t just knock on your door.

It’s clear nowadays: There’s very little evidence of individual job security anywhere now; there’s only industry and sector security – any company is likely to let anyone go whenever it fits the business’ business requirements.

We could however hit upon market-level security, by digging for high demand areas, together with shortages of trained staff.

Using the computer market for example, the last e-Skills analysis brought to light massive skills shortages in the UK of over 26 percent. To put it another way, this clearly demonstrates that the country is only able to source 3 certified professionals for every four jobs in existence today.

This single fact on its own highlights why the UK desperately needs considerably more new trainees to join the IT sector.

No better time or market state of affairs will exist for obtaining certification in this hugely expanding and blossoming market.

Be alert that all certifications you’re studying for are commercially relevant and are current. ‘In-house’ exams and the certificates they come with are not normally useful in gaining employment.

The main industry leaders like Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe or CompTIA have widely acknowledged proficiency programs. Major-league companies like these can make sure you stand out at interview.

Throw out the typical salesperson who pushes one particular program without performing a ‘fact-find’ so as to understand your abilities and also your level of experience. Always check they have access to a wide-enough product range from which they could solve your training issues.

It’s worth remembering, if you’ve had any relevant accreditation or direct-experience, then you will often be able to pick-up at a different starting-point to someone who is new to the field.

Starting with a user skills program first can be the best way to commence your computer studies, depending on your current skill level.
