<p>Daily we learn of more layoffs, more companies shutting their doors and ever increasing levels of unemployment. Those new to the workforce and longtime employees find the situation disconcerting. In today&#8217;s job market, traditional employment is increasingly difficult to find, and landing the perfect job seems nearly impossible. The situation looks bleak, but there is hope for the job seeker. </p>
<p>Despite the recession, some industries continue to perform well. These are the industries in which careers will be available now and in the future. </p>
<p>The biggest thing you have to consider is how to plan your education and choose a career path that is right for you and will work during a recession. There are some ways to recession-proof your career. You do this by focusing on the jobs that are stable even when the economy is on a downswing. For example, retail and entertainment is in a slump, but people always get sick, pay taxes, and consume energy regardless of the economy. The following careers should remain stable even during economic difficulty. </p>
<p>Teachers are always in demand. Our country is currently experiencing a shortage of good teachers. No matter what happens in the economy, children will still have to be educated and many adults return to school when they find themselves laid off or facing a career change. We always need teachers. The education of future generations depends on it, and, now, the ability of unemployed workers also depends on the availability of a good education. Teaching, therefore, is a good career move.</p>
<p>Another industry that remains unaffected regardless of the economy is healthcare. Advances in medication and longer life spans have created a greater need for specialized medical care for seniors. Health care administration is an information-driven career, which is appealing to those looking to move from information technology to a very stable career. </p>
<p>Auditors and accountants are always in demand and more so during a recession. Economic difficulties require businesses and individuals to monitor their expenses and books more carefully. They must also work to achieve greater tax deductions. Good accountants and auditors prove invaluable during a recession.</p>
<p>Energy use may decline during a recession, but it will not stop. Energy is essential to our everyday lives. Jobs in utilities, utility maintenance and administration offer stable career options. </p>
<p>With health care in demand and prescription drugs in demand, there is always a need for expertise in pharmaceuticals. Careers in pharmaceuticals will prove to be viable. This includes careers with pharmaceutical companies, pharmacists, and pharmacy techs. </p>
<p>Joining the military is also a good option. The military will stand regardless of the economy, especially during times of war. Some of the benefits of joining the military include housing and education subsidies in addition to pay. This makes the military a good career choice. </p>
<p>Security and law enforcement also remain strong during a recession. Unfortunately, increase in crime correlates with economic recession. This causes a need for greater security and law enforcement.</p>

<p>&#8220;Nevertheless, an honest man would count anyone who would like to work as unemployed. The U.S. Government compiles data on these uncounted unemployed Americans, but does not mention it in news releases. It can be found in Table A-12 on the Department of Labor&#8217;s website where it shows an unemployment rate of 16% for Feb. 2009.[2] It explains why these unemployed Americans are not included in their official unemployment rate: </p>
<p>&#8220;Marginally attached workers are persons who currently are neither working nor looking for work but indicate that they want and are available for a job and have looked for work sometime in the recent past. Discouraged workers, a subset of the marginally attached, have given a job-market related reason for not looking currently for a job. Persons employed part time for economic reasons are those who want and are available for full-time work but have had to settle for a part-time schedule.&#8221; </p>
<p>&#8220;In typical government doublespeak, it notes they are not &#8220;looking for work&#8221; but want work and &#8220;have looked for work in the recent past.&#8221; As a result, these people who want to work are not counted as unemployed. This 16% figure does not include a few million Americans who excluded by the survey parameters for these reasons&#8230;&#8221; </p>
<p>&#8220;These games allow the U.S. Government to report a current unemployment rate of just 8.1%, even though its own data of unemployed Americans who want to work indicates an unemployment rate of around 20%. This should concern all Americans because the unemployed burden society by collecting welfare or resorting to crime. A recent surge in Social Security Disability claims indicates another path the desperate unemployed are seeking.&#8221; </p>

<p>As a self-employed person, working from home on the Net, I am fairly certain that I still fall *somewhere* in these &#8220;uncounted&#8221; unemployed persons. I do want to make a comment on this: </p>
<p>GET YOUR OWN BUSINESS GOING. You CAN do this. </p>
<p>IMHO, this is the only safeguard you&#8217;ve got. My current work status has been hit with several deadly blows, by clients who&#8217;ve either severely cut back, or literally have gone fact up. But I have managed to keep work coming in, although at a *much* lowered rate. NO bennies, peeps, but the rent is paid. </p>
<p>I do not rely on governmental things anymore, and in fact, have not since the recession of 2000-2001&#8230; in which I was part of the IT bubble burst. Just keep on working, folks. But don&#8217;t factor in, any &#8220;bennies&#8221; that the government so kindly &#8220;gives you.&#8221; And above all, I try to live a life of gratitude&#8230;. although many days, anything you do or believe, is at an hour-by-hour pace.</p>

<p>Federal laws are usually are laid in place to safeguard the rights of its workers. These laws provide employment advice to both employees and their employers. Some of these laws are as follows:</p>
<p>Civil Rights Act Of 1866 And 1991: This particular employment law came into practice in 1886 but was however revised in 1991. Its aim was to make sure that all citizens from all states had equal employment rights. The rights in question were related to making or enforcing the contract documents, for suing and also giving evidence. All citizens are expected to get the same punishment or penalties for all felonies or crimes committed. Changes that were made in the 1991 amendments however made it possible for employees to sue the state for changes in conduct after the contract has been signed. </p>
<p>Occupational Safety and Health Act: The laws aim is to make sure that any dangers in the places of work are minimized. Training programs and holding of workshops are used to teach the employees on various safety and heath precautions that should be upheld in the work place. </p>
<p>Fair Labor Standards Act: This law was included among the federal employment law to govern the minimum wage that employees receive to 5.15 per hour. While those less than twenty years to be paid 4.25 per hour. It was also implemented that the overtime payable was to be one and a half times more than the regular per hour pay and the overtime hours limited to not more than forty hours per week. Equality in the payment between men and women was established with difference only in the case of the level of skill they show.</p>
<p>Worker Adjustment &amp; Retaining Notification Act: According to this act, a company is expected to alerts its employees two months before it closes down. This information may be communicated through the employees union or sent to each employee. It must be in written form and should be very specific.</p>
<p>Disabilities Act: This act states that any person with disabilities of any kind should not be discriminated against during employment. The disabilities may be in form of mental or physical challenges.</p>
<p>Age Discrimination in Employment Act: An employee is not supposed to be discriminated against because of age. This is a law that protects those who are above the age of forty. As long as someone has the necessary skills, age is not a factor.</p>
